...The emotions that form the basis of artistic emotion are counted as nine rasas: love, joy, anger, sadness, courage, hatred, fear, surprise, and tranquility. Of these, love is considered to be the most fundamental, and the rasa corresponding to tranquility is called śānta and is considered to be the highest aesthetic category.

The artistic music that was performed throughout the classical period of India under the Gupta Empire after the age of epics is called Gandharva. Its musical theory is explained in detail in documents such as the Natya Shastra and the Dattila, but the music itself has not been handed down.
