[1][1] The name of a place in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Facing the Hibikinada Sea. Former castle town of the Ogasawara clan with a fief of 150,000 koku. Since ancient times, it has been a key point for land and water transportation, and since the mid-Meiji period, it has flourished as a military city and the commercial center of northern Kyushu. It was incorporated as a city in 1900. In 1963 , it became the Kokura Ward of Kitakyushu City, and in 1974, it was divided into Kokura Kita Ward and Kokura Minami Ward. [2] A prefecture established in Buzen Province in 1871 when the feudal domains were abolished and prefectures were established. In 1876, the northern part was incorporated into Fukuoka Prefecture, and the southern part into Oita Prefecture.
