A cylindrical container with a disc-shaped base and a scale on the side wall for measuring the volume of liquid. It is usually made of glass, but some are made of synthetic resin. As a volumeter stipulated by the Weights and Measures Act, it is used to measure the internal volume, but in chemical experiments it is often used to dispense a certain amount of liquid with rough accuracy. One way to use it is to submerge a solid whose mass has been measured in advance into a graduated cylinder containing an appropriate amount of liquid that will not dissolve the solid, and determine the volume from the rise in the liquid level to measure the specific gravity.
