A gorge in the middle reaches of the Tenryu River in southern Nagano Prefecture. It is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. The gorge was created by the Tenryu River eroding the Ina Mountains in the southern Ina Basin, and features 60-80 meter high granite cliffs, strangely shaped rocks named Ryukakuho and Ubo-ishi, rapids, and green pines hanging from the cliffs. It is part of Tenryu-Okumikawa Quasi-National Park. The gorge was named Tenryukyo by Sakatani Roro, a Chinese scholar from Okayama who visited the area in 1847 (Koka 4). There are two sightseeing routes: the Tenryu Boat Cruise, which takes about 35 minutes from Benten Port to Tokimata Port, and the Tenryu Line Cruise, which takes about 50 minutes from Tenryukyo Onsen Port downstream to Karakasa Port. Its popularity is recovering due to advertising to attract visitors to the area, including the nearby Hirugami Onsen. The Koyakyo Bridge that spans the gorge has been relocated several times, but the view of the rapids from the bridge is still a famous spot. Get off at Tenryukyo Station on the JR Iida Line.
