Gochi - Megochi

Japanese: メゴチ - めごち
Gochi - Megochi

A hybrid name for several species of the family Ranunculidae that are distributed along the coasts of Japan and live on sandy, muddy seabeds, or a species of the family Flathead.

The Japanese name for the megochi, Suggrundus meerdervoorti , belongs to the order Perciformes and family Flathead. It is found in the Sea of Japan south of Aomori Prefecture, the Pacific Ocean south of Ibaraki Prefecture, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea. It has rough, fine scales on its body, numerous small projections on the dorsal ridge of its head, 6-8 spines on the ridge of its suborbital bone, and one backward-pointing spine on every 8-9 scales in front of its lateral line scales. It lives on sandy, muddy bottoms at depths of up to 130 meters, and mainly feeds on shrimp and fish. It spawns from March to August. It grows to a total length of just over 20 centimeters. It is mainly caught with bottom trawls. In Wakayama, Hyogo, and Hiroshima prefectures, the flathead Cociella crocodila is called megochi.

Kanto area anglers refer to several kinds of small fish belonging to the family Polytminae in the order Perciformes as megochi. They have no scales on their bodies, smooth skin, and small, circular gill slits. In the mouse goby Repomucenus curvicornis , the area around the first dorsal fin is black in males, and in females, the membrane of the third and fourth fin rays of the first dorsal fin has a black stripe. In the yellow-spotted flycatcher R. beniteguri , the front two fin rays of the first dorsal fin extend like threads in males, and in females, each fin ray of the first dorsal fin is short. In the flathead R. valenciennei , the fin rays of the first dorsal fin and caudal fin extend like threads, especially in males.
