Parrot, André
Born: February 15, 1901. Dessandan
[Died] August 24, 1980. French archaeologist in Paris. Studied Old Testament at the University of Paris and the University of Paris, and majored in Assyriology at the Louvre. In 1926 he was assigned to the French Institute of Archaeology in Jerusalem, and participated in the Byblos excavation in 1928. He led the Telluro excavations in 1930-31 and 1935. From 1933 onwards he led more than ten excavations as head of the Mali excavation team. In 1937 he became a professor at the Louvre, and in 1945 he became director of the Louvre Museum. His main works include Archéologie mésopotamienne (2 volumes, 1946-52), Ziggurats et Tour de Babel (1949), Sumer (1960), and Assur (1961).

Paro
Paro

A town in western Bhutan. It is located about 35 km southeast of the capital Thimphu, in the valley plains of the Paro River, a tributary of the Wong River, at an altitude of about 2,400 m, in a rice paddy area. It is a key location on the ancient transportation route to Tibet along the valley, and a fortress called Paro Dzong (also called Rinpung Dzong) was built there. The local administrative office and a monastery are located inside the dzong, as well as a villa, a beautiful stupa, and the national museum located in Tag Dzong. It is one of the cultural centers of Bhutan, and the number of visitors as a tourist destination is increasing. Population: 3,000 (estimated 1982).

ブータン西部の町。首都ティンプーの南東約 35km,ウォン川支流パロ川の河谷平野,標高約 2400mの水田地帯にある。谷沿いに通るチベットとの古くからの交通路の要地で,パロ・ゾン (リンプン・ゾンともいう) と呼ばれる城塞が建てられている。ゾンの中に地方行政庁と僧院があり,ほかに離宮,美しい仏舎利塔,タグ・ゾンに設けられた国立博物館がある。ブータンの文化の中心地の一つであり,観光地として訪れる人もふえている。人口 3000 (1982推計) 。
