Meguro Fudo

Japanese: 目黒不動 - めぐろふどう
Meguro Fudo

A Tendai sect temple located in Shimomeguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo. It is commonly known as Taieizan Ryusenji Temple. It is said that the temple was founded in 808 (Daido 3) when Ennin enshrined a statue of Acala on his way from Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture) to Mount Hiei. After entering China, he cast a single-pronged prong into the water to obtain a spring of pure water, and the temple's name was derived from this. In 1624 (Kan'ei 1), Tokugawa Iemitsu built a temple building in connection with falconry, and was granted an imperial plaque bearing the name "Acala" by Emperor Gosaiin. Since then, the temple has flourished, becoming the first of the five Edo Goshiki Acala temples, which is where the place name came from. There is a Nembutsu Hall of Kichiza, which is related to Yaoya Oshichi, and a gravestone of Aoki Konyo, the father of sweet potato cultivation. Many people prayed for recovery from illness by bathing in the Tokkonotaki waterfall on the grounds. The 8th of every month is the festival day.
