A large perennial or annual plant of the Papaveraceae family closely related to the Papaveraceae genus, 45 species are known (illustration). Most of them are distributed in the Himalayan mountain range and mountainous regions of China such as Sichuan, Yunnan, and Gansu, while M. cambrica Vig. (English name: Welsh poppy) is found in Western Europe and one species is found in California. Most are hairy. The leaves vary in shape from entire to deeply pinnately lobed, are soft, and exude a yellow milky liquid when cut.
