A town in Ashigarakami County, occupying the southwestern part of the Tanzawa Mountains in western Kanagawa Prefecture. The main settlement developed as a railway town and locomotive depot for the Tokaido Main Line (now the Gotemba Line) before the Tanna Tunnel was opened. Tea (Ashigara tea) and mandarin oranges are cultivated thriving on the mountain slopes. Miho Dam was built on the Kawachi River, and there is an artificial lake, Lake Tanzawa (completed in 1978). It is the climbing base for Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park. 224.61 km2 . Population: 11,764 (2010).

新潟県最北部,岩船郡の旧町。主集落は府屋。用材の産が多い。海岸沿いに羽越(うえつ)本線が通じる。蒲萄(ぶどう)山地が日本海に迫る海岸は花コウ岩の急崖をなす海府の景勝地で,特に笹川流(ささがわながれ)は有名。2008年4月岩船郡荒川町,神林村,朝日村と村上市へ編入。283.91km2。7291人(2005)。
