A town in Ashigarakami County, occupying the southwestern part of the Tanzawa Mountains in western Kanagawa Prefecture. The main settlement developed as a railway town and locomotive depot for the Tokaido Main Line (now the Gotemba Line) before the Tanna Tunnel was opened. Tea (Ashigara tea) and mandarin oranges are cultivated thriving on the mountain slopes. Miho Dam was built on the Kawachi River, and there is an artificial lake, Lake Tanzawa (completed in 1978). 神奈川県西部,丹沢山地南西部を占める足柄上(あしがらかみ)郡の町。主集落は丹那トンネル開通前の東海道本線(現在の御殿場線)の機関区・鉄道町として発展した。山地斜面では茶(足柄茶),ミカンの栽培が盛ん。河内川に三保ダムが建設され,人造湖の丹沢湖(1978年完成)がある。丹沢大山国定公園の登山基地。224.61km2。1万1764人(2010)。
