Critias' political stance was that of a thorough pro-Spartan oligarch, and as the leader of the Thirty Tyrants, an oligarchic government established in Athens in 404 BCE immediately after the defeat in the Peloponnesian War, he carried out a period of brutal repression, but he was killed in battle after a counterattack by the democratic faction, and his rule was short-lived.
