Athenian politician and author. He was related by marriage to the philosopher Plato and was one of the disciples of Socrates. He is also known as a writer of lyric poetry, tragedies, and prose. Critias' political stance was that of a thorough pro-Spartan oligarch, and as the leader of the Thirty Tyrants, an oligarchic government established in Athens in 404 BCE immediately after the defeat in the Peloponnesian War, he carried out a period of brutal repression, but he was killed in battle after a counterattack by the democratic faction, and his rule was short-lived. アテナイの政治家，著作家。哲学者プラトンと姻戚関係にあり，ソクラテスの門下に列した。抒情詩，悲劇，散文の作者としても知られる。クリティアスの政治上の立場は，親スパルタ的な徹底した寡頭派としてのそれで，とりわけ前404年，ペロポネソス戦争敗北直後のアテナイに成立した寡頭派政権〈三十人僭主〉の指導者として，一時期，苛烈な弾圧政治を行ったが，民主派の反攻を受けて戦死し，その施政は短命におわった。【伊藤貞夫】
