Confucian funeral

Japanese: 儒葬 - じゅそう

A funeral ceremony performed by Confucian scholars in the Edo period. Confucian scholars rebelled against funerals, which had become the professional occupation of Buddhist monks, and it was established based on the "Karei" (Family Ceremonies) edited by Zhu Xi, a scholar of the Song dynasty in China. It is said to have started with Hayashi Razan and Nonaka Kaneyama. It was banned in Edo, but was performed in Kyoto, Aizu, and other places, and was also said to have been performed by Tokugawa Mitsukuni.

江戸時代の儒者が行なったとむらいの儀式。儒者が僧侶の専門職になっていた葬式に反発し，中国，宋の学者朱子が編集した『家礼』を基にして制定したもので，林羅山，野中兼山から始ると伝えられる。江戸では禁じられていたが，京都，会津などで行われ，また徳川光圀が行なったという。
