Modern Novels - Kinkoshosetsu

In a broad sense, it is a general term for stories and tales that were produced and copied during the Muromachi period. In literary history, it is used in conjunction with Otogi-zoshi, Kana-zoshi, and Ukiyo-zoshi from the Muromachi to Edo periods, and their production and enjoyment extends into the early modern period. Works other than the Shibukawa edition were also referred to as Otogi-zoshi, Otogi-zoshi, and Otogi-soshi in similar books from the Edo period, and this continued into the Meiji period and later, so for convenience, the term Otogi-zoshi is used. However, there are also other terms such as medieval novels, modern novels, Muromachi period novels, Muromachi period tales, and Muromachi tales, and there are even works that include Otogi-zoshi under the name of medieval Shinto-Buddhist tales. The boundary between Otogi-zoshi and contemporary tales, tales, war chronicles, legends, Buddhist texts, and performing arts works is also unclear, and the various aspects of its transmission and the complexity of the copies handed down make it difficult to determine the meaning and scope of the word Otogi-zoshi in general. …

…　広義には，室町時代に製作･書写された物語，草子の汎称で，文学史では室町から江戸期にかけて，御伽草子，仮名草子，浮世草子と連ねて用いており，その製作･享受の時期は近世にまで及ぶ。渋川版以外の作品をも〈御伽草子〉〈御伽双紙〉〈御伽さうし〉などと称していたことが江戸期の類書に見られ，明治以降もこれを踏襲したので，便宜上御伽草子の呼称を用いるが，ほかに中世小説，近古小説，室町時代小説，室町時代物語，室町物語などの用語もあり，中世神仏説話の名のもとに御伽草子を収めるものまでまちまちである。同時代の説話，物語，軍記，縁起，法語，語り物，また芸能作品との境界も明瞭ではなく，その伝来の諸相，伝本の複雑さは，一概に御伽草子の語義や範囲を決めることが困難であることを示している。…
