Unfinished Symphony (English: Unvollendete Symphonie) German

Symphony No. 8 in B minor (D759) composed by Schubert in 1822. It is called "Unfinished" because only the first and second movements were completed, and the composition was stopped at the draft stage of the third movement. There are many theories about why it was left unfinished, but the general idea is that the two completed movements are very close in form and emotion, forming a complete world by themselves, so the composer did not feel the need to continue. What makes this work more famous than the fact that it is unfinished is that the melody, harmony, and composition of the music are unusually romantic for the time, and it is said to be the first symphony in which Schubert reached his own unique realm, and has had a great influence on later generations. The score was discovered in 1865, after the composer's death (1828), and it was premiered in Vienna that same year. In recent years, there is also a theory that this symphony is his Seventh Symphony.

シューベルトが1822年に作曲した交響曲第八番ロ短調（D759）のこと。第1、第2楽章のみ完成し、第三楽章の草稿の段階で作曲が中断していることから「未完成」の名がある。未完となった理由については多くの説があるが、完成した二つの楽章が形式的、情緒的にきわめて近い関係にあり、それだけで一つの完結した世界を形成しているために、作曲者はそのあとを続ける必要を感じなかったのではないかとする考えが一般的である。未完であること以上にこの作品の名を高めているのは、旋律、和声、楽曲の構成法などに、当時としては異例なほどのロマン的情緒が盛り込まれていることで、シューベルトが独自の境地に到達した最初の交響曲ともいわれ、後世に与えた影響は大きい。作曲者の死（1828）後の1865年に楽譜が発見され、その年ウィーンで初演された。なお、近年ではこの交響曲を第七番とする説も行われている。
