Year of death: 8th September 20th (884.10.12) Year of birth: Tencho 2 (825) A member of the imperial family in the early Heian period. Son of Emperor Junna and Empress Masashi (daughter of Emperor Saga). Also known as Prince Teishi. In October 833, at the request of Emperor Saga, he became crown prince at the age of 9 when Emperor Ninmyo ascended to the throne. However, since Ninmyo had a son, Prince Michiyasu (nephew of Fujiwara no Yoshifusa, 7 years old, later Emperor Montoku), anxiety was expected from the beginning. According to the "Biography of Prince Tsunesada," as he grew older, he thought about his own situation after the deaths of Emperors Saga and Junna, and repeatedly declined the position of crown prince, saying that "the misfortune was difficult to predict," but was not allowed to do so. He was deposed as crown prince in the Jowa Incident (842) that occurred after the death of Emperor Saga, and was transferred to Junna-in. The incident is thought to have been a plot by Fujiwara no Yoshifusa, who wanted Michiyasu to become crown prince. In January 849, he was awarded the third rank, but he became a monk, took the name Kojaku, and later became the founder of Daikakuji Temple. In 884, after Emperor Yozei was dethroned, Fujiwara no Mototsune asked him to ascend to the throne, but he firmly refused.
