Most species are small, with body lengths of 2 to 20 mm. The legs are long. They fly and walk well. The tarsus has three segments. They are mainly herbivorous, but some species are known to feed on small insects.

半翅目メクラカメムシ科Miridaeの昆虫の総称。本科のカメムシは複眼は発達するが，単眼を欠くのでこの名がある。触角は細長く4節。半翅鞘（はんししよう）には明りょうな爪状（そうじよう）部があり，楔状（せつじよう）部がよく発達。膜質部には2脈室がある。体長2～20mmで小型な種類が多い。肢は長い。よく飛翔（ひしよう）し，歩行する。跗節（ふせつ）は3節。主として植食性であるが，小昆虫を吸食する種類も知られている。
