The Spectator

A review and essay newspaper founded by British critics R. Steele and J. Addison. It was published from March 1, 1711 to December 6, 1712. It was published daily. It was relaunched in 1714, but did not last long. It mainly featured fictional stories of members of the "Spectator Club," such as landowners, new merchants, and military men, discussing the customs, morals, and art of the time, and also used fictional letters to the editor to cover almost every topic of the time, and preached common sense civic morality in a style and content that was easy for ordinary people to understand. It occupied an important position in the history of British periodicals, but even more so in the history of civic literature and novels. A weekly magazine of the same name was founded in 1828.

イギリスの評論家 R.スティールと J.アディソンが創刊した評論・随筆新聞。 1711年3月1日から 12年 12月6日まで発行。日刊。 14年に再刊されたが長くは続かなかった。「スペクテーター・クラブ」で当時の地主，新興商人，軍人などのメンバーが時代風俗，道徳，芸術などを論じ合うというフィクションを中心に，架空の投書の形式なども用いて，当時のほとんどあらゆる話題を取上げ，庶民にもわかりやすい文体と内容で常識的市民道徳を説いている。イギリスの定期刊行物史上で重要な位置を占めるが，それにもまして，市民文学，小説の歴史において重要な役割を果した。なお，同名の週刊誌が 1828年に創刊されている。
