Blind molerat

Japanese: メクラネズミ(盲鼠) - メクラネズミ（英語表記）blind molerat

A general term for a mammal of the genus Spalax in the family Muridae, order Rodentia, which resembles a mole (order Insectivora) in both appearance and habits. Five species are found in areas ranging from southeastern Europe to Greece and the Volga River, the plains north of the Caspian Sea and the Balkan Peninsula, and from Asia Minor to Egypt and northern Libya. They are 15-30 cm long, have no tail, and weigh 130-370 g. They have a stocky, round body, short limbs, and well-developed claws. Their eyes are buried under the skin, their ears are vestigial, and their upper incisors are largely exposed.

姿，習性ともモグラ(食虫目)によく似るが，齧歯（げつし）目ネズミ科メクラネズミ属Spalaxの哺乳類の総称。ヨーロッパ南東部からギリシア，ボルガ川まで，カスピ海北の平原およびバルカン半島，小アジアからエジプト，リビア北部までに5種が分布している。体長15～30cm，尾はなく，体重130～370g。体はずんぐりと丸く，四肢は短く，かぎづめが発達する。眼は皮下に埋まり，耳介は痕跡的で，上あごの門歯は大きく露出する。
