A general term for a mammal of the genus Spalax in the family Muridae, order Rodentia, which resembles a mole (order Insectivora) in both appearance and habits. Five species are found in areas ranging from southeastern Europe to Greece and the Volga River, the plains north of the Caspian Sea and the Balkan Peninsula, and from Asia Minor to Egypt and northern Libya. They are 15-30 cm long, have no tail, and weigh 130-370 g. They have a stocky, round body, short limbs, and well-developed claws.
