Hira

Japanese: 比良 - ひら

Utamakura. A group of high peaks in the Hira Mountains that stretch from north to south along the western shore of Lake Biwa on the border between Shika Town, Shiga County, Shiga Prefecture and Katata, Otsu City. The main peak is Bunagatake (1,214m). The mountain is majestic and is a training ground for Shugendo. "Hira Evening Snow" is one of the Eight Views of Omi. The strong winds that blow down in early spring were called "Hira Hachiara." Volume 2 of the Shin Kokinshu contains a poem by Miyauchi-no-kyo: "The mountain wind of Hira, stirring the flowers, blew until the traces of the rowing boat could be seen." Emperor Kokutoku's "Hira Palace" that appears in Volume 1 of the Manyoshu, and "Hira Port" in Volume 3 are from around here.

歌枕。滋賀県滋賀郡志賀町と大津市堅田との境，琵琶湖の西岸にそって南北に連なる比良山地中の高峰群。主峰は武奈ヶ嶽（ぶながたけ）(1214m)。山容雄大で修験道の行場である。〈比良暮雪〉は近江八景の一つ。春先に吹きおろす強風を〈比良八荒〉とよんだ。《新古今集》巻二に宮内卿の〈花さそふ比良の山風ふきにけりこぎ行く舟の跡見ゆるまで〉がある。《万葉集》巻一に見える孝徳天皇の〈比良宮〉，巻三〈比良の湊〉はこのあたりである。
