It belongs to the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo and is located in the basement of the Historiographical Institute of the university. Since 1981, together with the Original Materials Department (formerly the Modern Legislative Course Research Association), it has been called the "Modern Japanese Legal and Political Materials Center." It specializes in storing newspapers and magazines published throughout the country during the Meiji period (those from the Taisho period onwards are limited to those which were first published in the Meiji period and have continued to be published since). The decision to establish the center was made in 1926 thanks to a donation from Hirotaka Segi, founder of the domestic and international news agency Hakuhodo, and operations began in February of the following year. Thanks to the efforts of the first director, Gaikotsu Miyatake, many valuable newspapers and magazines were collected. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
