A commercial treaty signed in 1703 between John Methuen, the British representative, and the Marquis of Alegrete, the Portuguese representative. The treaty consisted of only three articles, and stipulated that in return for Portugal lifting its ban on luxury goods and allowing the import of British woolen products, Britain would import Portuguese wine at a tariff one-third lower than that of French wine. The purpose of this treaty was to correct the trade deficit with Britain through the export of Portuguese wine, and to secure cargo for the outbound journey from Portugal to British ships.
