A conglomerate that is the largest in the confectionery industry, focusing on chocolate, and also handles pharmaceuticals. Founded in 1916 as Tokyo Confectionery with investment from Meiji Sugar, the company changed its name to its current name in 1924. In 1926, it launched Milk Chocolate. In 1943, it transferred its dairy division to fellow Meiji Dairies. In 1946, it developed a pharmaceutical business, which now accounts for 40% of its sales, and its antibiotics are among the world's top products. In recent years, it has been actively expanding overseas. In April 2009, Meiji Holdings was established through a business merger with Meiji Dairies.
