A lava plateau in Tateyama Town, Nakaniikawa County, southeastern Toyama Prefecture. Also called Murodo. Located at an altitude of about 2,450m directly below Mt. Tateyama, it was created from Gyokuden lava that flowed out during the third period of the old Tateyama volcano. It is rich in natural scenery such as Jigokudani, Mikurigaike Pond, and Midorigaike Pond, and has long been a base for worshipping Mt. Tateyama. There are remains of ancient Tateyama worship such as Gyokuden Cave and Kokuzo Cave. In 1715 (5th Shotoku), the Kaga Domain built Murodo as a lodging for Tateyama meditation practitioners, but the current Murodo was rebuilt in 1752 (2nd Horeki) at the domain's expense as a hut for those touring the mountains.
