…In the late Middle Ages in Germany, after the time of the city law, it became legally recognized that a wife could make transactions independently without her husband's consent, at least within the scope of her daily life. Scholars call this independent right of a wife to dispose of things "Schlüsselgewalt" (the power of the keys). In China, both the head of the household and the housewife were in charge of household affairs, so they were both called "touka" or "touka-teki," but the housewife was especially called "obi-kaku-teki," or "the one who has the keys." …
