…A peasant revolt that occurred in the Virginia colony in North America in 1676. The rebels were mainly farmers and freedmen (indentured servants), with the addition of black slaves, and were led by Nathaniel Bacon (1647-76). They were dissatisfied with Governor W. Berkeley's oligarchic rule, especially his appeasement policy towards the Indians, and strongly demanded the release of land reserved for the Indians. After killing 14 Susquehannocks who were not involved in a minor dispute, they called for the extermination of not only the revengeful Susquehannocks but all Indians, and supported Bacon, a rising planter and councillor on the frontier, as their commander. …
