Modern Russian social thought. It can be traced back to the 18th century thinker Fonvizin, but was particularly prominent in the Slavophile movement that formed in the 1840s. It recognized the stagnation of modern civilization in Western Europe, which was in turmoil due to the civil revolution and the industrial revolution, and believed that the cause lay in the rationalist and logicalist thinking of the Roman Catholic Church. It therefore sought to restore the faith community, and asserted the superiority of the Russian Orthodox Church as the basis for this. Early Slavophiles such as IV Kireyevsky and Khomyakov placed emphasis on the salvific role of Orthodoxy. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
