[Died] September 23, 1828. London. British painter. In 1817 he moved with his family to Calais, where he studied watercolor painting under L. Francia, and in 1818 entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1820 to 1821 he produced watercolors of scenes from Normandy and the Seine, and in 1824 his works were exhibited at the Salon along with J. Constable, bringing awareness to the existence of British landscape painting. In 1825 he returned to England with E. Delacroix, and in 1826 he traveled to Italy, studying the Venetian school in particular. He was highly acclaimed at exhibitions in England and France in 1826 and 1828. He was called back to London by his family in 1828, but died young at the age of 26. His landscape paintings are representative of the Romantic movement, and had a major influence on 19th century British and French painters.
