Mount Asama

Japanese: 朝熊山 - あさまやま
Mount Asama
A mountain in the central-eastern part of Mie Prefecture, eastern Ise City. It is also called Mt. Asakuma. Its altitude is 555m. Kongosho-ji Temple, a temple of the Nanzen-ji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, is located on the southern peak, and it is known as the temple that protects the Ise Grand Shrine's evil direction. Excavations at the Asakumayama Sutra Mounds (nationally designated historic site) unearthed many sutra cases and mirrors bearing inscriptions from 1156 to 1186, and these have been designated national treasures as artifacts excavated from the Asakumayama Kyogamine Sutra Mounds in Ise Province. The main hall was built in the Momoyama period and is a national important cultural property. The Ise-Shima Skyline runs through the area. It is part of Ise-Shima National Park.
