An old town in Kitasoma County, southern Ibaraki Prefecture. It occupies lowland on the right bank of the downstream Kokai River, and was once flooded, but land reclamation has created a rice paddy area. The main settlement is a former post station on the Mito Kaido road, and the Joban Line runs through the area, so many people commute to Tokyo. 茨城県南部,北相馬郡の旧町。小貝(こかい)川下流右岸の低地を占め,かつては水害を受けたが,耕地整理により水田地帯をなす。中心主集落は水戸街道の旧宿駅で,常磐線が通じ東京への通勤者が多い。2005年3月取手市へ編入。32.87km2。3万3484人(2003)。
