A goddess in Greek mythology. Daughter of the Titan gods Koios and Phoebe, mother of Apollo and Artemis. She was loved by Zeus and became pregnant, but Hera became jealous and forbade all countries and islands from providing a place for the baby to be born, and also hid Eileitheia (the midwife goddess). In despair, Leto wandered the world, and was finally accepted by the island of Delos, which was still a floating island at the time, where she suffered for nine days and nights. The goddesses took pity on Leto, and sent Eileitheia out of sight of Hera, and Leto was finally able to give birth to the twin gods by clinging to a date palm tree. In return, she made Delos Apollo's beloved island. It is thought that Leto was originally the fertility goddess of Asia Minor.
