Murano Togo - Murano Togo

Architect. Born in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Architecture at Waseda University in 1918 (Taisho 7). Joined Watanabe Setsu Architectural Office in Osaka, where he worked as chief designer on many projects until 1929 (Showa 4). In 1929, he opened his own firm, Murano Architectural Office. The following year, he studied in Europe and the United States. After returning to Japan, he attracted attention with his designs of the Morigo Building (1931) and other buildings. His major works include the Sogo Department Store in Osaka (1935), Ube Civic Hall (1937), the World Peace Memorial Cathedral (1953), the Sogo Yomiuri Hall in Tokyo (1957), the Nippon Life Insurance Company Hibiya Building (1963), and the Chiyoda Life Insurance Company Headquarters (1966). He was highly praised for his style of freely incorporating modern sensibilities into classical works, and for being an accomplished practitioner. He became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1955 (Showa 30), and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1967.

Nissay Theatre
This theater is located inside the Nippon Life Insurance Company Hibiya Building. It was built in 1963 (Showa 38) to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Nippon Life Insurance Company's founding. It was designed by architect Togo Murano. Since its opening, it has hosted numerous operas, plays, musicals, and other performances. It also hosts events such as the "Nissay Masterpiece Theater" and the "Nissay Theater International Family Festival" with the aim of providing young people with an opportunity to enjoy performing arts. 建築家。佐賀県唐津生まれ。1918年(大正7)早稲田(わせだ)大学建築学科卒業。大阪の渡辺節(せつ)建築事務所に入り、29年(昭和4)までチーフ・デザイナーとして多くの設計を手がける。29年独立して村野建築事務所を開設。翌30年欧米に遊学。帰国後の森五ビル(1931)などの設計で注目される。主要作に大阪の十合(そごう)百貨店(1935)、宇部市民会館(1937)、世界平和記念聖堂(1953)、東京のそごう読売会館(1957)、日本生命日比谷(ひびや)ビル(1963)、千代田生命本社(1966)など。古典に近代感覚を自由に盛り込んだ作風と、熟達した実務派として高い評価を得た。55年(昭和30)芸術院会員、67年文化勲章受章。
