Gerona - Gerona (English spelling)

The capital of the province of Gerona in the Catalonia region in northeastern Spain. Population 74,879 (2001). Located on a hill 98 meters above sea level, the Onyar River, a tributary of the Ter River, runs through the town. Close to the French border, it has long been a strategic military location, and its history is marked by wars. In particular, in 1809, the residents fought for seven months against Napoleon's army. Narrow, winding streets, medieval buildings such as the cathedral (1312-1598), churches and monasteries, and castle ruins are found on the right bank of the Onyar River. Food, textile and other industries are located at the foot of the hills.

スペイン北東部、カタルーニャ地方ヘロナ県の県都。人口7万4879（2001）。標高98メートルの丘陵に位置し、テル川支流オニャル川が町を貫く。フランス国境に近く、古くから軍事上の要地となり、その歴史は戦争の歴史であった。ことに1809年、住民がナポレオン軍に抵抗して7か月間戦ったのは有名。狭い曲がりくねった道、大聖堂（1312～1598）をはじめ、教会や修道院などの中世の建築物や城跡など、歴史的建築物がオニャル川の右岸にある。食品、繊維などの工業が丘陵の麓(ふもと)で行われる。
