A town in Kumage District, Kagoshima Prefecture, occupying the southern part of Tanegashima. At Kadokurazaki on the southern tip is the Monument to the Introduction of Firearms, and at Takezaki on the southeastern tip is the space center of the National Space Development Agency (now the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). Most of the area is plateau, but it has the largest amount of rice paddies on the island, and field crops such as sugarcane and sweet potatoes are also thriving. Area: 110.36 km2 . 鹿児島県熊毛郡，種子島南部を占める町。南端の門倉崎に〈鉄砲伝来紀功碑〉，南東端の竹崎に宇宙開発事業団（現宇宙航空研究開発機構）の宇宙センターがある。大半は台地だが，島内では最も水田が多く，サトウキビ，サツマイモなどの畑作も盛ん。110.36km2。6218人（2010）。
