Year of death: November 23, 1884 (Meiji 17) Year of birth: Bunka 9.4.1 (1812.5.11) A Japanese scholar and poet from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. His first name was Kenji. His pen name was Shokei, his pen names were Horo and Shihoju, and his bookshop was Senmakisha. He was the second son of Tadamichi and Yoshi, physicians of the Kariya domain in Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture). He studied Japanese classics under Hata Soro and Uematsu Shigetake, and in 1849 he became a pupil of Motoori Naito. He studied waka poetry under Watanabe Tsunamitsu and others. He followed in his father's footsteps and became physician to the domain lord Doi Toshiyoshi in 1853, while also lecturing on Japanese and Chinese classics and teaching waka poetry. His family anthologies include the Horoshu, his compilation of waka anthologies the Ruidai Tamamoshu, and his annotations the Sankiki Kashu Hyochyu. He was also renowned as a book collector, and his collection of around 25,000 books is housed in the Murakami Bunko collection at the Kariya City Library. In the Meiji era, he was summoned by Prince Arisugawa Taruhito to serve in Suruga and gave short lectures to the Meiji government.
