Also known as the Indian marsh deer or swamp deer. A mammal of the Cervidae family in the order Artiodactyla. A large deer that lives in the swamps of India or in forests near water. It likes to live in large groups in the water, and hundreds or thousands of individuals were once often seen hiding in swamps, but now the population has drastically decreased as a result of hunting for their magnificent antlers. Their summer coat is reddish brown with white spots, and their winter coat is a uniform yellowish brown. 別名インドヌマジカ,ヌマジカ。偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類。インドの沼沢地,あるいは水辺近くの森林にすむ大型のシカ。大きな集団をつくって水に入るのを好み,かつてはしばしば数百~数千の個体が沼に身を潜めて集まっている姿が見られたが,現在はみごとな角を得るための狩猟の結果著しく個体数が減っている。夏毛は赤褐色の地に白い斑点があり,冬毛は一様な黄褐色。体長180cm,肩高115cm前後,尾長12~20cm,体重230~283kg。
