A type of clay mineral. Its chemical composition is very similar to muscovite, but it lacks alkaline ions between layers. It is thought that this deficiency is compensated for by hydronium ions. The name illite is used as a general term for fine white mica, and since it contains a variety of chemical compositions, it is now treated as a series name. It is widely distributed mainly in altered rocks of shale, acidic volcanic rock, and pyroclastic rock (pyroclastic rock) origin, and in muddy sedimentary rock. It is not as sticky as other clay minerals, and rubbing a slightly wet sample makes it slippery to the finger. It was named after the shale it was isolated from in the Illinois region of the United States.
