A former town in Higashiibaraki District, central Ibaraki Prefecture. A farming area where field crops are the mainstay, with dairy farming also thriving. It produces pears, chestnuts, melons, chives, and strawberries. National Route 6 runs through the center, and the Joban Line runs through the western end. Residential development is also progressing. In March 2006, it merged with Ogawa Town, Higashiibaraki District, and Tamasato Village, Niiharu District, to become a city, Omitama City. 61.90 km2 . Population 25,036 (2003). 茨城県中部,東茨城郡の旧町。畑作を主とする農村地帯で,酪農も盛ん。ナシ,クリ,メロン,ニラ,イチゴを産する。中部に国道6号線,西端に常磐線が通じる。住宅地化も進む。2006年3月,東茨城郡小川町,新治郡玉里村と合併し市制,小美玉市となる。61.90km2。2万5036人(2003)。
