Akita Sakigake Shinpo - Akita Sakigake Shinpo

Japanese: 秋田魁新報 - あきたさきがけしんぽう
Akita Sakigake Shinpo - Akita Sakigake Shinpo

A leading daily newspaper in Akita Prefecture. It publishes a morning and evening edition set, and boasts a circulation that far surpasses that of national newspapers such as the Asahi, Mainichi, and Yomiuri, as well as other local papers in Akita Prefecture. Its predecessor was the Kaji Shimbun, which was first published in Akita on February 2, 1874 (Meiji 7). It later changed its title to the Akita Kaji Shimbun, Akita Nippo, and Akita Shimpo. It clashed with the prefectural assembly in 1888 and ceased publication, but on February 15, 1889, it published its first issue under the title Akita Sakigake Shimpo, and has continued to publish to this day. Its company philosophy is "Serve the country with writing, tread on righteousness and never fear," and its editorial principles include "adhering to the freedom and independence of newspapers and impartiality, and fairly reflecting the public opinion of the prefecture's citizens." The circulation of the morning and evening editions is approximately 254,000 copies (2010).
