1876‐1953 Syrian journalist and writer. Born in Damascus, he was self-educated and then privately educated. In 1897 he founded the newspaper Sham (Syria), and in 1900 he traveled to Egypt where he worked as a newspaper and magazine editor. He returned to Syria in 1908 and became editor-in-chief of the newspaper Sharq in 1914. He served as Minister of Education from 1928 to 1931. He contributed to the establishment of the Arab Academy in 1919 and served as its chairman from 1920 until his death in 1953. His many works of history and literature include A Topography of Syria (6 volumes, 1925-29) and Islam and Arab Civilization (2 volumes, 1937).
