Milwaukee

Wisconsin is the largest city in the state, located on the west shore of Lake Michigan in the southeastern part of the state. It has a population of 596,974 (as of 2000). The city's name means "beautiful land" in the Native American language. It is one of the important lake ports, handling raw materials such as coal and oil, and after the completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway, port facilities were completed, and it is full of life with many foreign cargo ships coming and going. Nicknamed "America's Machine Factory," it is known as one of the leading industrial cities in the United States, ranking 15th in industrial production and 30% of the working population is engaged in industry. There is a large industrial distribution centered on the shores of Lake Michigan and the three river basins, including the Menominee, which flows into Lake Michigan, and among them, the machinery industry is number one. Diesel and gasoline engines, tractors, motorcycles, outboard motors, construction machinery, electrical appliances, batteries, etc. are produced, and food processing, printing and publishing industries are also thriving. Beer production, which was once known as the number one "beer town" in the United States, is still going strong, but it has recently lost its dominance, and the number of workers engaged in beer production has decreased to just over 1% of the total population. It is also known as a market and distribution center for grains, especially wheat. From around the 17th century, French explorers entered the area inhabited by Native Americans, and for a while, French Canadians appeared here to trade fur with the Native Americans. In 1818, S. Juneau of the North West Company founded the town, and in 1846, cityhood was implemented. From around 1840, the population rapidly increased due to immigrants from Europe, including Germany, the Netherlands, and Poland, and swelled fivefold in the 40 years from 1850 to 1890. The German population is particularly large, and they have had a major impact on the city's politics, economy, and society, and the German temperament is still inherited as the city's character. In terms of culture and education, the city is home to many excellent universities, including Marquette University (founded in 1881), the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1956), and the Medical College of Wisconsin, as well as the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, ballet, and a modern performing arts center that supports many civic cultural activities, the Milwaukee Center for the Arts, and the City Museum. Sports in particular are deeply rooted among the city's residents, and the residents are enthusiastic about games played by the Brewers in professional baseball (Major League Baseball) and the Bucks in professional basketball (NBA). There are many sports facilities for soccer, polo, baseball, tennis, golf, and many other sports, as well as parks, campgrounds, and other recreational facilities. The shoreline of Lake Michigan is famous for its beauty.
