1910‐61
Sultan and King of Morocco. Reigned 1930-53, 55-61. Born the son of an Alaouite sultan, he became regent in 1927 and sultan in 1930. The sultans were merely puppets of the colonial regime, but Muhammad V spearheaded the independence movement during World War II. He was dethroned in 1953, but continued to serve as a symbol of the anti-French movement during his exile, and was restored to the throne in 1955, achieving independence in 1956. In 1957, he changed his title from sultan to king, solidifying the foundations of royal power.

モロッコのスルタン，国王。在位1930‐53,55‐61年。アラウィー朝のスルタンの子として生まれ，1927年に摂政，30年にスルタンに即位した。スルタンは植民地体制の傀儡（かいらい）にすぎなかったが，ムハンマド5世は第2次大戦中から独立運動の先頭に立った。53年に廃位されたが，流刑中も反フランス運動のシンボルとしての役割を果たし，55年に復位，56年の独立を達成した。57年にスルタンから国王と改称，王権の基礎を固めた。
