Republic of Cyprus - Cyprus (English spelling)〈Greek〉Kypros
A country occupying the island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean. Official name: Republic of Cyprus. Capital: Nicosia. In 1571 it was under Ottoman rule, and in 1925 it became a British colony. It gained independence in 1960 amidst moves to annex it to Greece. There was conflict between the Greek residents, who make up 80% of the population, and the Turkish residents. The PKF (United Nations Peacekeeping Forces) have been stationed since 1964. In 1974, Turkish troops entered the north, dividing the island into north and south. In 1983, the north declared independence and called itself the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", but this has not been recognised by the UN. The Republic of Cyprus in the south joined the EU (European Union) in 2004. The euro was introduced in January 2008. Population: 1.1 million (2010). Cyprus. Kubrus. Southern Cyprus.
