A freshwater fish of the Perciformes order, Percidae family (illustration). Also known as Kawamebaru. In many regions, it is also called Yotsume because of the deep blue markings on the back of its gill covers that resemble eyes. Perhaps because it is a familiar fish, it has many local names. It is found in western Honshu, Shikoku, northern Kyushu, and parts of the Korean peninsula. It is small, about 10 cm in total length, with large, round scales. It is gray-brown in color, with red lines on the head and front of the body. This species is the only purely freshwater Perciformes fish in Japan, excluding naturalized species, and spends its entire life in freshwater.
