The capital of Equateur Province in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), central Africa. It is located directly on the equator, in the center of the Congo Basin. Until 1966, it was called Coquilhatville. Population 169,841 (1994). It is an important river port city facing the Congo (Zaire) River, and a key location for roads and domestic air routes. Its foundations were laid in 1883 by explorer Stanley and others. In the 1950s, it was a small city with a population of about 30,000, but in recent years it has undergone remarkable development.
