Diary of the Imperial Court

Japanese:
Diary of the Imperial Court
This is a duty diary kept by the kurōdo serving in the palace chambers of Seiryōden. It is also called a banki because it was written in shifts. The Yoro Shikinrei and the Engishiki stipulate that the Naiki was in charge of the "records of the Imperial Palace," and the Naiki diary, of which only a few surviving writings remain, likely originates from this provision. However, with the establishment of kurōdo in the Heian period, the palace diaries kept by kurōdo gradually came to replace the Naiki diary. The Kurōdo Shiki cited in the Shichū Gunyo states that, as an imperial decree from Emperor Uda, "records of duties should be written with care, regardless of their size, and without omissions," and goes on to give an example of the style in which it should be written in a "diary style."
