Marcel Granet

Marcel Granet

French sinologist. A Durkheimian sociologist, he applied his sociology to the study of ancient Chinese society. He studied sinology under Chavannes and went to China to study. After that, he developed an innovative system as a professor at the École des Oriental Languages and then at the University of Paris, where he was popular among young researchers. In his books such as "Ancient Chinese Rituals and Songs," "Religion of the Chinese," "Ancient Chinese Dances and Legends," "Chinese Civilization," and "Chinese Thought," he explains the existence of group marriages in ancient Chinese rural society, and the transformation from a matrilineal to a patrilineal society, all of which are original views. However, because his research relies mainly on translations, he has been criticized for not examining the original Chinese texts sufficiently and for only running with theory.
