When focusing on four nodes in an electric circuit, and considering the main variables as the current flowing into the circuit from the outside through these nodes and the voltage between the nodes, this circuit is called a four-terminal circuit. When the four nodes in a four-terminal circuit are divided into two sets of nodes, and the main variables are the current flowing between the external circuit through each terminal pair and the voltage of each terminal pair, this circuit is called a two-terminal pair circuit. Two-terminal pair circuits are often used by connecting a power source to one terminal pair and a load to the other terminal pair, and the properties of this circuit can be learned.

電気回路中の4個の節点に着目し，この節点を通じて外部からこの回路に流入する電流と，節点相互間の電圧とを主要な変数と考えたとき，この回路を四端子回路という。四端子回路で，とくに4個の節点を2個の節点の組に分け，それぞれの端子対を通じて外部回路との間で流れる電流と，それぞれの端子対の電圧とを主要な変数と考えたとき，この回路を二端子対回路と呼ぶ。二端子対回路は，一方の端子対に電源を，他方の端子対に負荷を接続するなどの形で多く用いられ，その回路の性質などを知ることができる。
