1581?-1639 A Mexican-born playwright, he traveled to Spain in 1600, studied law, and became a lawyer. He returned to his home country in 1608 to study law again, but returned to Spain in 1614. He served as recorder for the Council of the Indies. He was short and a hunchback, which led to him being mocked by literati of the time (Lope de Vega, Góngora, Quevedo, and others). Perhaps because of this, his works emphasized spiritual beauty, and portrayed people who were good-looking as having some flaws. Although he followed the style of Lope de Vega in terms of dramaturgy, he was on bad terms with Vega himself. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
