A Mexican-born playwright, he traveled to Spain in 1600, studied law, and became a lawyer. He returned to his home country in 1608 to study law again, but returned to Spain in 1614. He served as recorder for the Council of the Indies. He was short and a hunchback, which led to him being mocked by literati of the time (Lope de Vega, Góngora, Quevedo, and others). Perhaps because of this, his works emphasized spiritual beauty, and portrayed people who were good-looking as having some flaws. Although he followed the style of Lope de Vega in terms of dramaturgy, he was on bad terms with Vega himself.

メキシコ生れの劇作家。1600年にスペインに渡り，法律を学んで弁護士となる。08年に母国に戻り法律の勉強をしなおすが，14年に再びスペインに渡る。インディアス枢機会議の記録官を務めた。背が低く，せむしであったことを当時の文人たち(ローペ･デ･ベガ，ゴンゴラ，ケベードら)から嘲弄された。そのためか，彼の作品では精神的な美しさが強調され，外見のよい人間はどこかに欠陥のある人物として描かれている。また，劇作術の上ではローペ･デ･ベガの手法を守っているが，ベガ本人とは犬猿の仲であった。
