A treaty between Japan and the United States signed in Tokyo on April 2, 1953, and came into effect on October 30 of the same year. It consists of a preamble, 25 main articles, a coda, and a protocol, and stipulates that both countries will grant each other national and most-favored-nation treatment in a wide range of areas, including entry, business activities, exchange control, tariffs, and navigation. The commerce and navigation relationship between Japan and the United States had been in a treaty-free state since the Japan-U.S. Treaty of Commerce and Navigation concluded in 1911 expired in 1940, and after World War II it had only been provisionally regulated by the provisions of Article 12 of the Treaty of Peace with Japan, but this treaty has placed it on a stable basis. It is also the first treaty of commerce and navigation concluded by Japan with a foreign country after the war.
