Bunraku puppet theater. Historical piece. 5 acts. Commonly known as "Hyugajima" and "Blind Kagekiyo". Written by Wakatake Fuemi, Kokuzosu, and Nakamura Akei. First performed at the Toyotakeza Theater in Osaka in October 1764 (Meiwa 1). This is a sequel to the story of Akushichibei Kagekiyo. The third act, in which Kagekiyo's daughter visits him after he has been exiled to Hyuga, was adapted into a kabuki play and became particularly famous. Kagekiyo's daughter Itotaki, wants to bring her blind father back to the capital and have him serve in the government, so she tries to sell herself to the Hanabishi-ya Inn in Tegoshi. Feeling filial piety, Sajidayu, the owner of Hanabishi-ya, takes Itotaki to Hyuga to visit her father, but Kagekiyo, now a blind beggar, lies and tries to send him back, saying that his father has starved to death.
