One of the concentration camps established by the Nazis. It opened in March 1937 near the city of Weimar in central Germany. Initially, it was a facility for detaining and taking in Germans who opposed fascism, but during World War II, many foreigners, including prisoners of war from the Soviet army, were also detained there. Over the eight years until it was liberated, it held approximately 240,000 detainees representing 32 different nationalities, and approximately 56,000 people lost their lives due to inhuman treatment, starvation, and unbearable labor. E. Thälmann was one of them. [Kitsuka Hideto] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
